The Scope Creep Problem

You get a prompt asking you to build a simple task management API. Basic CRUD operations, maybe some user authentication. Should take 3-4 hours according to the instructions.

But then you start thinking. What about input validation? Error handling? Rate limiting? Logging? Tests? Documentation? What if they want to see Docker integration? Maybe add a CI/CD pipeline to show DevOps awareness?

Forty hours later, you’ve built a production-ready system that demonstrates impressive engineering—and signals that you can’t prioritize, estimate accurately, or ship within constraints. The evaluator wanted a focused solution showing clean code fundamentals. You delivered a sprawling codebase that takes an hour to review.

This is the most common failure mode for experienced developers. Your instincts around “doing things properly” work against you in an assessment context.

The Minimum Viable Confusion

The opposite problem hits less experienced candidates. You read the instructions, implement exactly what’s asked with minimal additional thought, and submit something that technically meets requirements but demonstrates nothing beyond basic competency.

The prompt said “build an API.” You built an API. It works. There’s no README explaining your decisions. No tests. No consideration of edge cases. No indication that you thought beyond the literal requirements.

Both extremes fail. The assessment isn’t testing whether you can code—your resume and portfolio already suggest that. It’s testing judgment: can you deliver appropriate work for a given context?

Questions that show good judgment:

  • “The prompt mentions user authentication. Should I implement full auth, or is a simple API key approach acceptable for this scope?”
  • “You mentioned the project should take 3-4 hours. Should I prioritize core functionality within that window, or is exceeding that timeframe acceptable for a more complete solution?”

Questions that show poor judgment:

  • “What technology should I use?” (Shows inability to make decisions)

If the role involves DevOps or infrastructure, showing containerization basics (a simple Dockerfile) is reasonable. A full orchestration setup is overkill.

Third-Party Libraries: Use Judgment

Using libraries is fine—nobody expects you to implement cryptography from scratch. But there’s a balance:

Appropriate library use: Authentication libraries for auth, ORM for database access, testing frameworks for tests.

Questionable library use: Pulling in a massive framework for a simple task, using five different libraries that do similar things, dependencies that suggest you can’t write basic code yourself.

Review Before Sending

Before you submit, verify:

  • The project runs from a fresh clone (test this on a different directory)
  • All commands in your README actually work
  • No sensitive information in the code (API keys, passwords)

Prepare to Walk Through Your Code

Expect questions like:

  • “Walk me through your overall architecture.”
  • “Why did you choose [specific technology/approach]?”
  • “How would this scale if we had 10,000 users?”
  • “What would you change if you had another week?”
  • “How would you add [new feature]?”
  • “Tell me about this specific function—what does it do?”

Practice explaining your code out loud. Open your submission, pick random files, and explain what they do and why. If you can’t explain something clearly, that’s a red flag you need to address before the interview. Own Your Trade-Offs

You made decisions under constraints. Own them.

Strong answer: “I chose to skip rate limiting because the assessment suggested 3-4 hours and I prioritized core functionality. If this were production code, here’s how I’d implement it…”

Weak answer: “Oh, I should have added rate limiting. Sorry about that.”

The first answer shows judgment and self-awareness. The second shows lack of confidence. Interviewers expect incomplete solutions—they want to see how you think about what you didn’t do.

Be Ready for Extensions

A common interview technique: asking you to extend your solution on the spot.

“Now let’s say we need to add user roles. How would you modify the database schema? Where would you add authorization checks?”

This tests whether you understand your own code well enough to extend it and whether you can think through problems collaboratively. Don’t pretend to have planned for this—work through the problem out loud, explaining your reasoning.

Ask Good Questions Back

The follow-up interview is bidirectional. You’re also evaluating them. Questions that work well:

You Ran Out of Time

Be honest about it. In your submission note, explain: “I wasn’t able to implement [feature] within the time constraint. Here’s my approach if I’d had another few hours: [brief explanation].”

This is far better than submitting broken code or obviously rushed work. It shows professionalism and realistic self-assessment.

You Got Stuck on Something

Getting stuck isn’t failure—it’s normal engineering. What matters is how you handle it.

If you hit a blocker, document it: “I spent significant time trying to implement [feature] using [approach]. I discovered [problem] and pivoted to [alternative approach] because [reasoning].”

This demonstrates problem-solving process, which is actually what they want to see. Employers care about troubleshooting skills—your ability to adapt when things break, not your ability to execute a plan that goes perfectly.

The Requirements Were Unclear

If you made assumptions, state them explicitly: “The prompt didn’t specify how to handle [scenario]. I assumed [your assumption] because [reasoning]. If that’s incorrect, here’s how I’d modify the implementation…”

This shows you thought carefully about requirements even when they were ambiguous—exactly what you’ll need in real work where requirements are always incomplete.

The Bigger Picture

Take-home assessments aren’t just testing coding ability. They’re simulating a miniature version of working at that company: receive requirements, make decisions, implement, document, present.

None of this means your technical skills don’t matter. They do. But technical skills are table stakes—they get you the assessment in the first place. What separates candidates at this stage is everything around the code.

How long should I actually spend on a take-home assessment?

Should I include features they didn’t ask for?

What if I disagree with something in the requirements?

Implement what they asked for, then note your concern in documentation. “The requirements specified storing passwords in plaintext. Is it okay to use code from my other projects?

Check if the assessment prohibits this. If not, reusing clean code is fine—just make sure it’s actually yours and fits the current context.
